ABERLOUR WHISKIES

AberlourMost of the whisky consumed in France is blended, but the best whiskies are all Single Malts.

Single Malt : a guarantee of origin

Both single malt and blended whiskies are made from grain, but the former is produced by double distillation in a pot still (very similar to the ones used for Cognac in France) from malted barley dried on a peat fire, and each single malt comes from only one distillery, whence the name “single malt”. “Blended” whiskies as their name implies, are a mixture of 10 to 40% of single malts with whiskies made from various other grains (generally corn) and distilled in a column still. These differences in the raw materials used and the method of distillation result in whiskies that are considerably cheaper than single malts and which are produced in much larger quantities.

Aberlour : the distinction of a great terroir

ABERLOUR is produced on SPEYSIDE, in the heart of the HIGHLANDS. SPEYSIDE is also known as the Golden Triangle as it is here that the greatest Scotch whiskies are produced using complex and elegant malts. SPEYSIDE gets its name from the River Spey, one of Scotland’s most important rivers, famous for its salmon, and particularly well known for the purity and softness of its waters.

Aberlour : a single malt aged in sherry and bourbon barrles

All single malts age in oak barrels previously used for bourbon, but the best single malts are then transferred to sherry casks (or Butts) which can be five or six times more expensive. ABERLOUR is a product of this double-casking process and it’s the balance between sherry and bourbon casks that marks a great malt whisky – of which ABERLOUR is a fine example.

The contribution of Bourbon casks : a golden yellow colour, vanilla aromas and fruity tastes of green apple, pear, orange...
The contribution of Sherry Butts : an amber red colour, soft sweet aromas such as gingerbread and toffee, spicy notes including cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg, and a creamier thicker body
