Groffier Family
One may not always share the tastes of Robert Parker, especially as regards the wines of Burgundy, but it is hard not to agree when Pierre-Antoine Rovani, who represented him in Burgundy, writes of the Robert Groffier domaine in The Wine Advocate (N°118):“Each and every wine at this Domaine was a first-rate example of its terroir, from the Bourgogne to the Grands Crus. The meticulous work of Serge Groffier (Robert’s son) in the vineyards is evidenced by each glass of nectar from this well-known and certainly soon-to-be-famous domaine.”These words were written seventeen years ago, in 1998, and it is now clear that the prophecy has indeed come to pass: the Groffier domaine, which already had a fine reputation, is today recognized as one of the best wine producers in Burgundy.

The history of the domaine now extends over four generations, starting in the nineteenth century with Frédéric Groffier, before Jules Groffier his son acquired most of the parcels in the 1930s. Robert succeeded him and began selling the wine in bottles. He was joined in 2005 by Nicolas, who has been largely responsible for helping the domaine achieve what The Wine Advocate calls “superstar statusˮ.
Nicolas insists that everything he does is a continuation of the family tradition: “My number one objective is to preserve our appellations and the skills that have been passed down in our family from generation to generation. When I started at the domaine, my desire wasn’t to bring about any drastic change, but rather to perpetuate what was in place; besides, my parents still help me with the domaine. I adapt to the vintage. In 2009 I intervened very little, whereas in 2013 and 2014 there was major work to be done on the vines in order to try and achieve excellent results. We always try to produce the best wine with what the vintage gives us.”

The Groffiers live in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, even though they do not own any wines in the municipality. Most of their parcels are in fact located in Gevrey-Chambertin and above all Chambolle-Musigny, where they own most of the famous Premier Cru Les Amoureuses, which they produce to an admirable standard.

The wines have a marked family resemblance, they are deep and colourful, but are characterised by a sensuality and a finesse that make them very alluring.
